The CancerDancer Blog
A little personal, a lot infuriating.

A little personal, a lot infuriating.

This blog will sound more like an old entry on my personal blog, but since there is a great lesson involved, I am blogging here, on CancerDancer.  And this lesson will have to do with being an empowered patient — a big mouth, and accordingly, a winner.

Let me recap a little. As many of you know, I am involved in a PARP inhibitor drug trial at the National Institute of Health. I am thrilled to be involved in it because a) it might be keeping me alive, and b) it gives me a chance to contribute to research that might save lives. Accordingly, I am required to travel to Bethesda, MD every three weeks to have them check me out and give me the actual pills. Every other appointment includes an MRI and a CT scan as well. These are the days that cause me and my collective universe to hold our breaths as we wait for the docs to review the pictures and tell me, once again, that I am stable — fine.

This moment – right now.

This moment – right now.

As many of you know, my motto through this scary journey has been “Don’t panic.” Panic is the enemy. It turns good times to bad ones, clouds your judgment, and robs you of essential sleep. It is ruinous. If you can keep panic at bay, you can still find your joy, even in the worst of times.

I was reminded of this in my yoga class last week, when the instructor said, “There is no past, not really, and no future — there is only this moment — right now.” Okay, we all know that peaceful moments in yoga class are really good times to have clarifying thoughts. And I was struck, again, by the power in remembering that life is what is happening in this very second– as I am typing or as you are reading. Right now.

The Greatest Health Resource is…….Us.

The Greatest Health Resource is…….Us.

Posted on Monday, December 05, 2011 in Health News that You Can Use, Community
One of my goals in writing this blog is to get healthy people ready for they day that they or their loved one gets sick. Statistically this will be almost all of us. How can we be as ready as possible? Will we make the right steps in the beginning when it may matter most? Many of us have an emergency plan for a home fire, but how many of us have a plan for a serious health crisis?

So today’s blog will focus on an amazing tool that can save your life. It is my  hope that you will remember it when the proverbial, uh, stuff hits the fan. That resource is the online community. Patients, everywhere, who have experienced every illness and every treatment, met every doctor and can tell us all about it when we are making our choices.

A Second Opinion is a First Rate Idea

A Second Opinion is a First Rate Idea

In the last few weeks it has become apparent to me that if you get important information from a doctor, you should find a second (and maybe third, fourth) doctor immediately. Because medicine is not a right/wrong, black/white, here/there world. It is grey and fuzzy and subject to different opinions, and if you are not a doctor yourself, you cannot know and understand the info that you are given.

We Must Fill the Clinical Trials.

We Must Fill the Clinical Trials.

Posted on Thursday, August 11, 2011 in Health News that You Can Use
It is becoming clear to me that we could get results and drugs and tests and more breakthroughs if our clinical trials were bursting with participants. We have to do our part, ladies. Everyone with this disease should consider being in a clinical trial. It may or may not end up being the right choice, but we owe it ourselves, other warriors and our collective daughters to give it serious thought.
