Lately I have drifted into an old, familiar, comforting pattern. I am starting to live as if I am going to live.

For those of you that watch “The Big C” on Showtime, you will remember the episode last season where Laura Linney, battling stage IV cancer and her friend Hugh Dancy, dying of same, are approached by a mugger with a gun. Instead of responding with the somber and expected fear, both patients burst out laughing and tell the assailant that he picked the wrong victims. They turn, still giggling, and leave the robber dumbfounded.

A little personal, a lot infuriating.

This blog will sound more like an old entry on my personal blog, but since there is a great lesson involved, I am blogging here, on CancerDancer.  And this lesson will have to do with being an empowered patient — a big mouth, and accordingly, a winner.

Let me recap a little. As many of you know, I am involved in a PARP inhibitor drug trial at the National Institute of Health. I am thrilled to be involved in it because a) it might be keeping me alive, and b) it gives me a chance to contribute to research that might save lives. Accordingly, I am required to travel to Bethesda, MD every three weeks to have them check me out and give me the actual pills. Every other appointment includes an MRI and a CT scan as well. These are the days that cause me and my collective universe to hold our breaths as we wait for the docs to review the pictures and tell me, once again, that I am stable — fine.
